After intermission, the musicians performed works by Russian-Jewish composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky of Uzbekistan, Michio Mamiya of Japan, Kayhan Kalhor of Iran and traditional music from Azerbaijan.
Michio Mamiya's " Kio " ( 1988 ), played on Saturday, was an engaging dialogue between the cello and the shakuhachi, a Japanese flute, played by Kojiro Umezaki.
The Tokyo also gave a compelling account of a work that was freshly minted, the Third Quartet by Michio Mamiya, a 69-year-old Japanese composer, subtitled " A Song of the White Wind ."
Japanese composers whose works have been championed by TKWO include Yasuhide Ito, Hiroshi Hoshina, Tetsunosuke Kushida, Akira Miyoshi, Michio Mamiya, Bin Kaneda, Masamichi Amano, Toshiro Mayuzumi, Toshio Mashima, Isao Matsushita, and many others.
